UN Envoy to Cyprus Likely to Be Appointed After Easter

The appointment of a new personal envoy to Cyprus by UN Secretary-General António Guterres is expected to take place after Easter, due to ongoing bureaucratic procedures.

According to the Cyprus News Agency, citing diplomatic sources, the necessary formalities are still being finalized and an official announcement will be made “at the appropriate time.”

“There are some bureaucratic steps that still need to be completed. Once those are out of the way, the appointment will be officially announced. More details are likely to follow after Easter,” the source said.

Meanwhile, preparations continue for the upcoming meeting between President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, scheduled for May 5. Negotiators Menelaos Menelaou and Güneş Onar are in ongoing contact, with their most recent meeting held last Wednesday and another expected next week.

The decision to appoint a new UN envoy was first announced by Secretary-General Guterres following the informal 5+1 meeting on the Cyprus issue, held in Geneva on March 17–18.

According to some reports, the frontrunner for the role is María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar, a Colombian diplomat who previously held the same position last year.
