Negotiators from Both Communities in Cyprus to Discuss the Opening of New Checkpoints

Negotiators from both communities in Cyprus will meet on Thursday to discuss the opening of new crossing points.

Güneş Onar, the special representative of Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, confirmed in an interview with Cyprus Mail that she will meet with the Greek Cypriot chief negotiator Menelaos Menelau at 11:00 PM on Thursday.

The Turkish Cypriot side is advocating for the opening of checkpoints in Haspolat, an eastern suburb of Nicosia, and the isolated village of Louroujina, located in the Nicosia district.

Just last week, Ersin Tatar, the leader of Northern Cyprus, and Nikos Christodoulides, the leader of the Greek Cypriots, met with the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Cyprus, Colin Stewart, at his residence in the buffer zone. During the meeting, the two leaders discussed the opening of new crossing points.

Along with Haspolat, the possibility of opening the Akıncılar-Limnia checkpoint was also brought up for discussion.

The leaders agreed that these steps would provide significant socio-economic benefits for both Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots on the island.

Following the meeting, Republic of Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides announced that he had submitted an eight-point proposal package for consideration to the leader of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
