Two suspects detained at Ercan Airport in drug case

As part of a police operation at Ercan Airport, two suspects were detained and subsequently brought to court and remanded in custody for up to seven days.
The incident occurred on May 12, 2026, around 04:00 AM in the airport's departure zone. According to the investigation, suspicious objects were discovered as luggage passed through the Kale-8 X-ray system.
Police officer Ozan Kuşak, providing testimony in court, reported that during the inspection of two passengers' suitcases, items were identified that aroused suspicion. Upon further search, a metal grinder and a small container with a substance believed to be cannabis were found in the luggage of one of the detainees. All items were seized for forensic analysis.
According to police information, both suspects were immediately detained. One of the detainees stated in her testimony that they had arrived on the island for tourism purposes, and the prohibited substance was allegedly offered to them by an unknown man during a walk in Girne.
The investigation is ongoing. Law enforcement authorities are establishing all the circumstances of the incident and possible distribution channels for the prohibited substances.
