Hür-İş Trade Union Federation Protests Outside TRNC Ministry of Finance
The Hür-İş Trade Union Federation held a protest and press conference in front of the TRNC Ministry of Finance in Northern Cyprus on March 16, 2026, expressing opposition to recent price hikes.
Federation Chairman Ahmet Serdaroğlu criticized the ministry's actions and statements, asserting that the rise in fuel prices "will make people's access to food impossible." According to him, purchasing power has shrunk, and workers have been carrying a heavy burden of expenses for many years.
Serdaroğlu also mentioned reports of a possible cancellation of the "Cost-of-Living Adjustment" (Eşel Mobil) system and warned of upcoming increases in July, which he believes will not be reflected in the wages of the poor and workers. He noted that while some receive zero tax breaks under incentive measures, workers pay a major share of taxes.
Speaking from the podium, Serdaroğlu stated: "We have come here once again to remind you of your duties," and warned that if current policies continue, the population will continue to take to the streets in protest.
For residents of Northern Cyprus, these statements signal the possibility of further protest actions and ongoing public pressure on the government regarding economic policies and income indexing.
