Amendments to the Explosives Law tighten controls and increase fines — Department of Mines
The Department of Mines and Quarries of the Ministry of Agriculture stated that the amendment to the Explosives Law of 2026 adopted by the House of Representatives represents a significant step toward enhancing public safety in Cyprus.
In its statement, the department noted that the purpose of the amendment is to strengthen oversight and compliance, as well as to tighten regulations governing the illegal use of fireworks and other explosive materials.
Among the key provisions is a tenfold increase in the maximum fine for the illegal use of explosives, from €5,000 to €50,000. The amendment also assigns the Chief of Police the role of Inspector of Explosives and entrusts him with responsibility for conducting relevant inspections.
In addition, the range of liable persons is expanded: responsibility is extended beyond fireworks users to include event organizers and the owners or managers of venues where fireworks displays take place.
The department emphasized that the primary objective of the amendment is to protect citizens, vulnerable groups and animals. For residents of Cyprus, this means stricter controls and increased penalties for violations related to fireworks and explosives.
