Man detained in Famagusta in connection with child cross-border abduction case

TRNC authorities have detained a 26-year-old man of Turkish origin in Famagusta, suspected of illegal border crossing and violation of a military zone. The man was found with his young son following media reports regarding the possible removal of the child from the south of the island.
According to TRNC police, the press reports were taken as official notification, after which law enforcement agencies launched an investigation. As a result, the man and the child were located in the Famagusta area.
The detainee faces charges of illegal entry into TRNC territory and violation of border crossing rules. Authorities are also considering charges for leaving the country without permission from the competent bodies.
Following intervention by social services, it was decided to temporarily leave the child in a familiar family setting under the grandmother's care. Authorities emphasize that the priority remains the protection of the minor's interests and ensuring his safety.
According to Turkish Cypriot press reports, an arrest warrant had previously been issued for the man by the Greek Cypriot administration. Meanwhile, TRNC official bodies are continuing their own investigation into the circumstances of the case.
Law enforcement agencies note that border control and compliance with current legislation remain a key task for the TRNC security forces.
