Dust wave from Libya hits Cyprus — high pollution levels in the western part
On Friday, January 30, 2026, dust transport from the Libya region began in Cyprus, meteorologists reported. As of 09:00, the dust affected the western half of the island, with concentration levels ranging from moderate to high, and very high in mountainous areas (for example, Agia Marina Xyliatou).
In the eastern half of the island, concentrations are currently lower — low to moderate — but are expected to rise during the day. Overall, the island is forecasted to experience increasing dust levels to high and very high values in the coming hours.
In mountainous areas, raindrops and light muddy rain have been observed. Dense haze has also been recorded there, which, combined with increased dust concentration, significantly reduces visibility. Drivers on the mountain road network are advised to exercise increased caution.
The phenomenon is expected to gradually weaken in the second half of the day, starting from the west. For tomorrow, Saturday, another dust transport is forecasted, mainly in the afternoon. Overnight from Sunday to Monday, another wave is possible, which may be more intense than the previous ones.
Vulnerable groups, especially people with respiratory illnesses, are advised to monitor dust levels and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities if possible. Others are recommended to limit physical activity outdoors and reduce time spent outside in areas with high and very high dust levels. Source: KitasWeather.
