Authorities discuss strict measures for electric scooters: ban or registration
The authorities of Cyprus are concerned about the growing number of accidents involving electric scooters. Against the backdrop of weak control and traffic violations, two options are being discussed: a complete ban on scooters on roads or the introduction of mandatory registration, license plates, and insurance.
Currently, by law, scooters may only travel on roads with a speed limit of up to 30 km/h, bicycle lanes, and specially designated areas. The maximum design speed is 20 km/h, wearing a helmet is mandatory, and at night a reflective vest is also required. However, police record cases where the devices accelerate to 80 km/h.
From 2019 to 2025, 2 fatalities and dozens of injuries have been recorded. During the same period, more than 7,500 fines were issued — mainly for riding without a helmet and traveling in prohibited areas.
Environmentalists propose creating a separate register for scooters, introducing license plates and mandatory insurance. An alternative initiative предполагает a complete ban on their use on roads. A decision has not yet been made.
