On New Year's Eve, a Grandmother, Grandfather, and Two Grandchildren Died in a Car Accident in Cyprus
In Cyprus, a fatal accident occurred on New Year's Eve, resulting in the death of four people. The victims of the tragedy were members of one family – a grandmother, a grandfather, and two grandchildren.
According to media reports, the accident happened on the night of January 1st on the Platres road near Kato Polemidia in Limassol. A pickup truck collided with the family's car at a traffic light on Ayia Anastasia Street.
The police identified the four deceased individuals as 73-year-old Nicholas Zavros, 74-year-old Evanthia Zavrou, and two grandchildren - 17-year-old Nicholas Georgiou and 27-year-old Vatula Georgiou.
It is known that the family was celebrating the New Year in Limassol. At the request of the grandparents, the grandchildren were driving them home to the village of Limnatis. The 27-year-old woman was behind the wheel.
According to preliminary information, the victims were not wearing seat belts. The police reported that all of them died instantly at the moment of the collision. To extract the bodies from the mangled car, the fire service was called to the scene.
The driver and passenger of the pickup truck were also taken to the hospital. The 44-year-old driver passed an alcohol test, which yielded negative results. After receiving medical assistance, he was arrested.
According to preliminary data, the accident may have been caused by the pickup truck driver exceeding the speed limit, but the police are investigating other possibilities.
