Protest in Nicosia Against Cat Disappearances
A protest rally is scheduled for Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at 14:30 in front of the Police Headquarters in Nicosia.
The event is held under the slogan "No to Cat Abductions." The organizers demand an investigation into the alleged "abduction and disappearance" of cats from a supermarket parking lot in Latsia. The appeal also mentions reports of potential cat disappearances in other areas of Cyprus.
The participants of the rally demand:
- transparency in the investigation;
- accountability if violations are identified;
- protection of stray animals.
The statement emphasizes: "Animals are not objects" and "Silence is complicity."
The protest was sparked by complaints filed on January 25 regarding the alleged removal of three neutered cats from a supermarket parking lot in Latsia. The police confirmed that the case is under investigation and testimonies are being gathered.
Currently, law enforcement agencies have not established signs of a crime. Furthermore, it has not yet been confirmed whether other cases of cat disappearances across Cyprus are linked to the incident in Latsia.
Animal welfare organizations are calling on the police to provide more information on the progress of the investigation and measures taken to find the animals.
