Water Supply Situation in Polis Chrysochous Critical but Manageable
The water supply situation in Polis Chrysochous is critical but manageable, Paphos District Governor Charalambos Pittokopitis stated on Wednesday.
Following a meeting in Polis Chrysochous with key officials regarding water supply and irrigation, he characterized the current data as challenging.
Pittokopitis noted that existing and planned measures could potentially cope with the situation. Final decisions on irrigation will be made in April after reviewing all data on reservoir water levels to optimize service for producers.
Regarding water supply, the governor emphasized the political commitment to establishing a desalination plant in Polis Chrysochous. Currently, the district relies entirely on boreholes, which are becoming increasingly unreliable due to climate change and prolonged drought.
Studies are underway to identify suitable sites for the desalination plant, which could begin operations by the summer of 2027. Temporary water resource management will rely on existing reserves.
The Water Development Department is moving forward with plans to establish a water treatment plant in Neo Chorio to serve the tourist areas of Prodromi and Neo Chorio. A second facility for the Argaka and Pomos areas is also being considered.
Authorities are also exploring the possibility of creating additional boreholes and measures to reduce water loss to ensure sufficient supplies for households, tourism, and agriculture.
