Cyprus police warn of new wave of phone fraud
The police have once again recorded a series of complaints from citizens related to telephone fraud. Scammers pose as employees of financial transaction platforms and payment services, attempting to gain access to personal data and bank accounts of residents.
According to law enforcement agencies, the scammers use Cypriot phone numbers that do not actually belong to the callers. During the call, an automated voice message is played, inviting citizens to follow instructions and press certain buttons on their phone to confirm allegedly ongoing transactions or payments.
The police emphasize that such calls are fraudulent and aimed at stealing money or confidential information. Citizens are urged not to follow the instructions of answering machines, not to share personal data, and not to confirm any operations over the phone.
Special attention is recommended for those who are actually waiting for the completion of online payments or banking transactions. In such cases, the police advise checking the authenticity of calls and messages through official communication channels of banks, payment platforms, or other organizations.
Law enforcement officials remind that official financial institutions do not require confirmation of operations via random phone calls and do not ask for passwords or access codes. The investigation into new fraud cases is ongoing.
