New Parliament in Cyprus: ELAM Doubles Its Representation
Vote counting in the parliamentary elections in Cyprus has been completed. Following the processing of 100% of ballots, six political parties have entered the new parliament, with one of the main surprises being the sharp strengthening of the ELAM party.
According to the official results, DISY remains the largest political force with 17 seats. In second place is AKEL with 15 MPs. DIKO won 8 seats.
What drew the greatest attention from analysts was ELAM's result, as it doubled its parliamentary representation and also won 8 seats, strengthening its position in the political system of Cyprus's southern administration.
New political forces are entering parliament on this scale for the first time. The ALMA party and Direct Democracy won 4 seats each, clearing the threshold and securing representation in the legislative body.
The final seat distribution is as follows:
— DISY — 17 seats
— AKEL — 15 seats
— DIKO — 8 seats
— ELAM — 8 seats
— ALMA — 4 seats
— «Direct Democracy» — 4 seats
Experts note that the new parliament will be more fragmented, and the strengthening of nationalist and protest forces may influence domestic policy and the Greek Cypriot side's approach to the Cyprus issue.
