ALMA prepares parliamentary alliances after Cyprus elections

The party “ALMA — Citizens for Cyprus,” which entered parliament for the first time, is already considering possible political alliances to take part in the election of the new speaker of parliament. According to Cypriot media, the movement of Odysseas Michaelides may cooperate with AKEL and the “Direct Democracy” party.

After the parliamentary elections, the attention of political circles is focused on future coalitions and preparations for the 2028 presidential campaign. Michaelides himself, who previously served as Cyprus’s auditor general, has softened his rhetoric toward AKEL secretary general Stefanos Stefanou, which is seen as a signal of possible cooperation.

ALMA was created in May 2025 as a political movement and later transformed into a full-fledged party. Michaelides built the campaign around an anti-corruption agenda and expected a double-digit result in the elections. However, the outcome fell short of expectations.

Despite an active campaign and high ratings in early-year polls, the party won 5.8% of the vote and four seats in parliament, finishing fifth nationwide. This is significantly below the February forecasts, when ALMA’s support was estimated at 12.5%.

Nevertheless, for the new political force, the result is considered a notable success. Michaelides said that the party achieved parliamentary representation without a traditional party apparatus and relied mainly on volunteers.

Analysts note that, despite the “bitter-sweet” outcome of the elections, ALMA may play an important role in shaping parliamentary balances and become one of the factors in the future 2028 presidential race.
