Six detained in Cyprus over firecrackers and Easter bonfires
Cyprus Police have stepped up checks ahead of Easter and detained six people in a single night for using firecrackers and preparing Easter bonfires.
In total, law enforcement officers seized 143 firecrackers, as well as various items that could be used as weapons. In some locations, wood prepared for lighting bonfires was confiscated.
In Paphos, police detained two 15-year-old teenagers and one 18-year-old who were found with 131 firecrackers. The older individual was also found in possession of brass knuckles.
In Nicosia, two teenagers (aged 15 and 17) were detained while transporting a waste container filled with wooden pallets and plastic chairs, presumably stolen from a nearby building to be used for a bonfire.
In Larnaca, police arrived at a site where a bonfire was being prepared, but the young people fled. A 29-year-old man was detained at the scene; drugs, knives, a bat, and other items were found in his car.
