In Cyprus, a Ukrainian citizen robbed of 420,000 euros was arrested for laundering 6 million
In Cyprus, a Ukrainian citizen had her bag snatched, containing 420,000 euros intended for buying an apartment. Her misfortune didn't end there: over the weekend, she was arrested for laundering a large sum of money.
According to local media reports, the robbery occurred last Friday. The woman arrived in the Republic of Cyprus and on the same day lost her savings.
Upon arrival at Larnaca airport, the Ukrainian declared the money to customs authorities.
As the victim herself told the police, after this, she took a taxi to Limassol. When she got out of the car, two unknown individuals on a motorcycle approached her, snatched her bag with the money, and fled.
According to the victim, the stolen 420,000 euros were intended for buying an apartment.
However, the police did not believe the story of the Ukrainian victim and arrested her on suspicion of money laundering. Despite the stolen money being declared, the police considered her explanations insufficient.
Over the weekend, the woman appeared before the Nicosia District Court on charges of illegally importing over 6 million euros into Cyprus in cash from August of last year to March.
The woman is charged with participation in a criminal organization, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit a serious crime. As a result, she was remanded in custody for five days.
The police are considering the possibility of the robbery being staged.
