American experts on sanctions against Russia arrived in Cyprus
A group of American experts arrived in Cyprus to investigate sanctions violations. The Cyprus Confidential report highlights the island's ties to Russia.
The arrival of a group of American specialists was confirmed by government spokesman Konstantinos Letimbiotis.
The team includes 24 specialists from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). They will assist the Cypriot authorities in the investigation of 29 cases.
It is noted that the experts are ready to immediately begin work and cooperate with the authorities in investigating cases at the disposal of the police.
According to cyprus-mail, Cyprus found itself in a difficult situation due to the fact that it helped Russian oligarchs avoid sanctions after the United States and Great Britain introduced repressive measures against dozens of Cypriot legal entities and individuals for providing financial assistance to Russian entrepreneurs.
Last month, an investigation by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) and the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) published the Cyprus Confidential report, which contained reports that financial intermediaries in Cyprus, including major accounting firm PwC, are trying to help Russian oligarchs to avoid sanctions.
The publication notes that this is not the first visit of American sanctions experts to Cyprus this year.
