For the first time in its history, Cyprus will send a student to study at the prestigious U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. The first citizen of the republic to win a place at one of the world’s leading military educational institutions is Leonidas Fereos.

Defense Minister of Cyprus Vasilis Palmas announced the cadet’s achievement at a ceremony held on 29 May at the Ministry of Defense. Fereos will begin his studies in mid-June.

The U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis trains officers for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Admission to the academy is extremely difficult: candidates go through a multi-stage selection process that includes academic exams, physical fitness testing and a medical examination. Foreign students are admitted only in exceptional cases and, as a rule, within the framework of interstate cooperation.

The Defense Minister noted that Leonidas Fereos’ success could serve as an example for other young Cypriots considering a military career. According to Palmas, the future cadet will represent not only his family in the United States, but the entire Republic of Cyprus.

The event is also seen as another step toward strengthening cooperation between Cyprus and the United States in the field of security and defense. According to the head of the Defense Ministry, relations between the two countries in the military sphere are now at the highest level in history.

Cooperation has expanded significantly in recent years. After the lifting of the U.S. arms embargo in 2022, Cyprus was included in the IMET military education program, and the National Guard regularly takes part in joint activities with the New Jersey National Guard.

The sending of the first Cypriot cadet to Annapolis has become yet another symbol of the deepening strategic partnership between Nicosia and Washington.
