The Cypriot defense industry is strengthening its position in the field of unmanned technologies — an area that is now considered one of the key factors in modern security. Swarmly Aero, based in Cyprus since 2018, develops unmanned aerial vehicles and maritime robotic systems that can be used for surveillance, threat deterrence and enhancing the country’s defense capabilities.

According to company director Gary Rafalowski, Cyprus was chosen as the headquarters because of its EU membership, favorable business environment and the ability to test equipment year-round. Today, all major areas of the company’s operations — from research and development to production — are concentrated on the island. The company employs 45 people, 36 of whom are Cypriot citizens.

Swarmly has already handed over two H-10 Poseidon reconnaissance drones to the National Guard for artillery needs. The company says it sees this as a contribution to strengthening the security of the country where its employees, families and production facilities are located.

Rafalowski stressed that unmanned systems are becoming an important tool of asymmetrical deterrence. In his view, modern technologies allow small states to significantly raise the cost of potential military aggression without the need to expand traditional armed forces.

The company is also actively working in international markets. Its main export destinations remain countries in Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Latin America, where practical solutions for surveillance and security are in demand.

Particular attention is being paid to the development of maritime unmanned platforms. According to company experts, the most effective model for protecting Cyprus’ maritime borders and exclusive economic zone could be a combination of aerial drones and unmanned surface vessels capable of providing surveillance and rapid response over long distances.

Swarmly believes that the rapid development of unmanned technologies is already changing approaches to defense around the world, and Cyprus has the opportunity to become one of the regional centers of innovation in this field.
