Cyprus among leaders in “dirty” electricity: the island is almost entirely dependent on oil
Cyprus has found itself among the most “carbon-intensive” countries in the world in terms of electricity generation — due to the high share of petroleum products in its energy mix.
According to published data, the indicator for Cyprus is estimated at around 742 g CO₂-eq/kWh, and in certain periods it has risen to approximately 850 g CO₂-eq/kWh. This is comparable to the most “carbon-heavy” power systems, where coal or oil play a major role.
It is noted that this refers specifically to emissions from electricity generation, not to the “environmental friendliness of the country as a whole”. The main reason for such figures is Cyprus’s dependence on oil in power generation and the limited ability to quickly replace it with cleaner sources.
