Fires in the TRNC caused damage of more than 3 million lira in a week
Over the past week, 20 fires and 29 incidents requiring intervention by special services occurred in the TRNC. Total material damage exceeded 3.1 million Turkish lira. This is stated in the weekly report of the fire service published by the press office.
According to data for the period from May 18 to 24, the main causes of fires were short circuits in electrical wiring, carelessly discarded cigarette butts, sparks from wires coming into contact due to strong winds, as well as uncontrolled burning of garbage and dry grass. In a number of cases, fires spread from dumps to adjacent areas.
Firefighters also recorded fires caused by overloaded electrical transformers and sparks from agricultural machinery. Some fires, according to the report, were deliberately set.
In addition to extinguishing fires, rescue units were repeatedly dispatched to carry out assistance operations. Over the week, rescuers freed people trapped in elevators, on balconies and on building roofs, and also extricated injured people from vehicles after road accidents.
In addition, emergency services personnel helped animals: cats trapped in vehicle engine compartments and in trees were rescued, as well as calves that fell into feed pits on farms.
Police stressed that with the approach of the summer season and rising temperatures, the risk of new fires increases. Residents were urged to observe fire safety measures and avoid lighting open fires near dry vegetation.
