Fire Damage in Northern Cyprus Tops 2.3 Million Lira in Just One Week

Northern Cyprus experienced 13 fires and 34 emergency incidents over the past week, resulting in damage estimated at over 2.3 million Turkish lira, according to the weekly report from the General Directorate of Police.

Between April 14 and April 20, the reported fires were caused by a range of factors, including electrical short circuits, discarded cigarette butts, sparks from electrical wires igniting dry grass, mechanical failures in vehicle engines, fuel leaks, and in some cases, deliberate arson.

Alongside firefighting efforts, emergency crews responded to a variety of rescue calls — including freeing trapped cats and dogs, rescuing a boy stuck on the roof of a single-story kiosk, and helping people trapped in elevators.

The fire department was also involved in traffic safety operations, fire prevention initiatives, educational activities, and the transportation of deceased individuals to hospitals for forensic examination as part of ongoing investigations.
