Head of the TRNC Employers’ Union calls for a focus on price reductions and economic measures
On 7 January 2026 in Northern Cyprus, the Chairman of the TRNC Employers’ Union, Metin Arhun, following the second meeting of the Minimum Wage Determination Commission, stated that attention should be focused not only on wages, but also on economic measures and reducing prices in the market.
Arhun emphasized that the minimum wage, as its name suggests, is the lowest paid rate and is not a living wage. According to him, regional developments and inflation in the Turkish lira complicate both workers’ incomes and the development, investments and lives of employers.
The Chairman noted that under current conditions no one can overcome the difficult situation alone and called for joint action. The TRNC Employers’ Union presented data on economic conditions, wage levels, the position of national income compared to European Union countries, and the role of foreign workers in working life.
Arhun also called for supporting production, increasing employment in the private sector and working to boost external demand to attract resources. In his assessment, the focus on economic measures and price reductions is aimed at reducing the negative impact of inflation on household incomes and business conditions.
