TRNC firefighters extinguished 13 fires and responded to dozens of emergency incidents in a week
The TRNC Fire Service published its weekly incident report for the period from May 11 to 17. During the week, there were 13 fires and 25 emergency responses by special services. Total material damage from the fires is estimated at 2 million 875 thousand Turkish Liras.
According to data from the police press office, the main causes of the fires were electrical short circuits, carelessly discarded cigarette butts, sparks from wires touching in strong winds, uncontrolled burning of garbage and dry vegetation, and violations of domestic appliance operating safety rules.
In several cases, fires were caused by sparks from metal cutting with power tools, food left unattended on the stove, candles in glass candle holders, and gas leaks from kitchen stove hoses.
In addition to extinguishing fires, emergency service personnel participated in numerous rescue operations. During the week, firefighters rescued cats trapped in car engine compartments, between metal structures, and on electric poles. Operations were also carried out to rescue pigeons from ventilation pipes.
Furthermore, firefighters assisted people trapped in elevators and residential premises, participated in extricating victims from vehicles after traffic accidents, and provided transportation of deceased bodies for forensic examination.
The services paid special attention to prevention: fire safety inspections and briefings for the population were conducted throughout the week.
Authorities once again urged residents to observe precautionary measures when handling electrical appliances, open flames, and gas equipment, especially with the hot season approaching.
