Maritime Traffic Observation Stations Completed in Northern Cyprus
Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced the completion of three vessel traffic observation stations in Northern Cyprus. The works were carried out as part of the Eastern Mediterranean Vessel Traffic Services project.
According to the minister, the stations are located in Karpaz, Sadrazamköy, and Çayırova. The establishment of a vessel traffic management center in Famagusta is also underway. Construction work and software factory tests have been completed, while equipment delivery and system development are ongoing.
The system is expected to become operational in the second half of 2026.
The project aims to monitor vessel movements 24/7 using radars, cameras, communication systems, and automatic identification systems (AIS). Data will be transmitted to both the management center in Northern Cyprus and the vessel traffic control center in Mersin, Turkey.
Uraloğlu stated that the system will enhance maritime safety, ensure rapid response to emergencies at sea, assist in combating smuggling, and improve overall maritime traffic control in the region.
