Turkish Cypriot Taxi Drivers Federation warns of action in Northern Cyprus
On April 9, 2026, Murat Karalar, chairman of the Turkish Cypriot Taxi Drivers' Associations Federation, warned of potential strike action in Northern Cyprus in a written statement. Karalar addressed the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Erhan Arıklı, demanding clarification on when the Licensing Committee will meet, and urged for a new member to be appointed to the vacant seat and pushed through the Council of Ministers to convene the commission.
According to Karalar, the taxi sector has been awaiting a tariff review since January; no increase in taximeter fares has occurred, and he believes drivers' rights have been violated for three and a half months. He warned that if concrete steps are not taken by Monday, the federation will decide on organizing actions and gather at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.
For residents and passengers, this means potential disruptions in taxi services and gatherings near the ministry if the action takes place. Drivers are advised to follow the federation's official announcements and consider the risks when planning trips in the coming days.
