Museums of Nicosia
Dervish Pasha Mansion
Dervish Pasha Mansion is located in the historic Arabahmet quarter inside the old city walls of Nicosia. It is a large traditional house where the features of local urban architecture are clearly visible: an inner courtyard, wooden elements, living rooms and utility rooms. The museum displays Ottoman artifacts, household items, furniture, costumes and details of the daily life of a wealthy family.
Lapidary Museum
The Lapidary Museum is located east of Selimiye Mosque. The gallery is housed in a two-storey stone building in Venetian style, built in the mid-15th century. Originally, this building stood in the inner courtyard of Saint Sophia Cathedral and was used as a guest house for pilgrims and travelers.
The exhibition features stone fragments from old buildings, coats of arms, decorative elements, inscriptions and architectural details. The museum is especially interesting for those who want to understand how the appearance of old Nicosia changed in different periods.
Mevlevi Order Museum
The Mevlevi Order Museum, also known as the dervishes' museum, is located just behind the Kyrenia Gate in the Ibrahimpasha quarter. Mevlevi Tekke is one of the important historical and religious buildings of Northern Cyprus. It was created for meetings of the Sufi brotherhood and served as a place of spiritual retreat.
Inside you can see the hall for the sema ritual, the tombs of the sheikhs, musical instruments, dervish costumes, manuscripts and household items. A visit usually takes 30–45 minutes.
Fazıl Küçük Museum
Fazıl Küçük was born in 1906 and was a doctor, publisher, politician and the first vice-president of the Republic of Cyprus after gaining independence from British rule in 1960. He founded his own political party and the newspaper Halkın Sesi.
The museum displays his office with books and magazines, waiting and treatment rooms for patients, documents and personal belongings. Some rooms retain a working atmosphere, as the museum is connected with research activity, so it is better to check the opening hours before visiting.
Museum of Barbarism
The Museum of Barbarism is located in the former house of Major Dr. Nihat İlhan. In the 1960s, he served in the Turkish Cypriot contingent. During the events of December 1963, the house was attacked, as a result of which his wife and three children were killed.
This is a memorial museum, not an entertainment attraction. The exhibition requires a calm and respectful attitude to the subject.
Museum of the National Struggle
The Museum of the National Struggle is dedicated to the events and social history of Turkish Cypriots in the 19th–20th centuries. The exhibition includes documents, photographs, commemorative items and materials related to the political and social life of the community.
The museum is best included in a route around Nicosia for those interested in the island’s modern history and who want to see the documentary part of the exhibition.
Museums of Famagusta and the surrounding area
Canbulat Museum
The Canbulat Museum is located in Famagusta near the city fortifications. Inside is the tomb of Canbulat — a military commander who took part in the Ottoman siege of Famagusta in the 16th century and played an important role in the city’s conquest.
The exhibition tells about the Ottoman period, the military history of Famagusta and the events connected with the siege of the city. The museum is conveniently included in a walking route through old Famagusta together with Othello Tower and the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque.
Museum in Othello Tower
Othello Tower dates back to the medieval period and was used to guard Famagusta and the harbor. According to a widespread legend, Shakespeare's hero Othello was written from the fortress commander.
Today the tower and Castello Fortress are interesting as a museum of fortifications and one of the key points of the old city. It is best to visit the site together with a walk along Famagusta's city walls.
Ancient city-museum of Salamis
Salamis, also known as Salamine, is one of the main archaeological attractions of Northern Cyprus. It is located just a few kilometers north of Famagusta.
The site preserves a gymnasium, Roman baths, an amphitheater, colonnades, a central square and other elements of the ancient city. For the visit, it is better to allow at least 1.5–2 hours.
Dungeon and Namık Kemal Museum
The building associated with the Namık Kemal Museum dates back to the Venetian period and was used as a prison during the Ottoman Empire. Today, next to the prison room there is a museum dedicated to the life and work of the writer and public figure Namık Kemal.
The site is located in old Famagusta, so it is convenient to combine it with the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque, Othello Tower and a walk along the city walls.
Icon Museum in the Monastery of Saint Barnabas
The Monastery of Saint Barnabas and the Icon Museum are located near the Royal Tombs between the village of Tuzla and the ruins of Salamis. The complex includes a church that now serves as a museum, monastery rooms with an archaeological collection and a chapel at the saint’s tomb.
The exhibition features icons, church items and archaeological finds, some of which date back to the 7th century BC. The monastery is convenient to visit together with Salamis.
Museums of Kyrenia and the surrounding area
Bellapais Abbey
Bellapais is one of the main sights of Northern Cyprus. Today it is no longer an active abbey, but a museum site and concert venue. The Gothic architecture, inner courtyard and views of Kyrenia make Bellapais one of the most popular places near the city.
It is best to come in the morning or closer to sunset, when the light is softer and it is less hot.
Shipwreck Museum in Kyrenia
The Shipwreck Museum is located inside Kyrenia Castle. It houses one of the most important and well-preserved pieces of maritime history — the remains of a Greek merchant ship from the 4th century BC.
The ship was accidentally discovered by a sponge diver during a storm in 1965. Today it is one of the main exhibits of Kyrenia Castle and an important archaeological find of the classical era.
Freedom and Peace Museum
The Freedom and Peace Museum is located near Kyrenia, on the road towards Alsancak. It is a historical museum at the site of the landing of the first Turkish troops. The exhibition includes documents, equipment, photographs and commemorative objects.
The museum is suitable for those interested in the island’s recent history and military themes.
Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts
The Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts is located on the campus of the Near East University. The collection consists of works from different schools, styles and directions: painting, graphics, sculpture and contemporary art works.
It is one of the largest museum sites of contemporary art in Northern Cyprus. It is convenient to include it in a separate trip around the university campus.
Museums of Güzelyurt and western Northern Cyprus
Vouni Palace Museum
Vouni Palace is considered one of the interesting archaeological sites in the western part of Northern Cyprus. It is believed that it was built during the period of Persian influence, around 330 BC.
The site is located on a high mountain by the sea. In addition to the ruins, it is worth lingering here for the panoramic views of the coast. Vouni is convenient to combine with a visit to the ancient city of Soli.
Museum of the ancient city of Soli
Soli is one of the oldest places in Northern Cyprus. Among the most notable preserved objects are the basilica, theater, elements of the ancient city and a mosaic depicting a swan.
Soli is located not far from Vouni, so it is convenient to see both archaeological sites in one day.
Museum of Archaeology and Natural History
The Museum of Archaeology and Natural History is located in the center of Güzelyurt. The exhibition features artifacts from the surrounding area, начиная from the Neolithic era: jewelry from the Byzantine period, pottery, bronze vessels from the Late Bronze Age and other finds.
The museum is convenient to visit together with the Church and Icon Museum of Saint Mamas, which are nearby.
Icon Museum in the Church of Saint Mamas
The Icon Museum belongs to the Museum of Archaeology and Natural History of Güzelyurt and is located in the neighboring Church of Saint Mamas. Entry is usually covered by a single ticket, but to visit you may need to ask the caretaker to open the church.
Inside you can see icons and church items. It is a short but logical stop after the archaeological museum.
Museums on the way to Karpas
Miniatures Museum
The Miniatures Museum is located on the northern coast of Northern Cyprus, near the road from Kyrenia towards Karpas, between Tatlısu and Mersinlik. Nearby is the old church of Panagia Pergaminiotissa, and behind it — the miniatures site itself.
The park presents 25 mini versions of various sights of Northern Cyprus, as well as several objects from Turkey. This is a convenient short stop on the way to Karpas or back.
What else to see
The three famous castles of Northern Cyprus do not formally belong to classical museums, but in essence they are open-air museums. They are worth including in the route if you are interested in fortresses, views and historical architecture.
