Limassol Bell Ringer on Trial for Excessive Noise
A bell ringer from Limassol is facing trial for causing excessive noise and misusing his privilege to ring church bells.
According to local media, the church official allegedly abused his position by ringing the bells for extended periods and amplifying the sound using a megaphone, reportedly as an act of revenge against the community leader. The incident, which sparked the legal proceedings, occurred in the village of Platanistas. It is believed the bell ringer displayed excessive zeal from July to September of last year, right after the election of the new village council.
The priest is accused of noise pollution, with 20 documented instances of improper use of the church bells. Local residents, along with the village mayor, filed complaints with the police, and the matter was also reported to the Bishop of Morphou.
