Cyprus authorities introduce mandatory identification for all prepaid SIM card holders
The authorities of Cyprus are introducing mandatory identification for all holders of prepaid SIM cards (including eSIMs). By November 10, users must verify their identity in order to continue using telecommunication services. This rule applies to both active and long-unused SIM cards — otherwise, they will be automatically deactivated and become unavailable for calls, SMS, and internet access.
Identification is free, does not require a number change, and can be done online or at mobile operator offices. If the SIM card is used by a minor, an adult must provide the personal data. The new regulation also covers devices with SIM cards — such as alarms, drones, and GPS trackers.
In this way, Cyprus joins other countries where anonymous SIM cards are banned. In Greece and Turkey, for example, purchasing or using such cards already requires official registration. The impact of the new rules on international eSIMs remains unclear.
