Cyprus Authorities Release and Deport 11 Foreign Prisoners
As part of a state policy to reduce prison overcrowding, the Republic of Cyprus on Thursday released and immediately deported 11 foreign convicted prisoners. This was announced by the Ministry of Justice and Public Order.
It is specified that the decision was taken in the public interest and implemented on the instruction of the Minister of Justice, in line with initiatives previously announced by the President of the country. All eleven prisoners were granted a presidential pardon on the mandatory condition of their immediate departure from the Republic of Cyprus.
It is noted that all of the released foreigners were due to be freed in any case during 2026. The authorities promptly applied the procedures предусмотренные законом, which allowed for the immediate deportation of the convicted individuals and the inclusion of their details on the list of persons banned from re-entering the country.
The ministry emphasized that this measure is part of a comprehensive plan to address the chronic problem of prison overcrowding. At the same time, it is stated that the actions of the state are carried out in compliance with the principles of the rule of law and are aimed at strengthening public safety.
