There was an explosion in a restaurant in Nicosia: the building was seriously damaged

Around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, an explosion occurred in a restaurant located at the corner of Ezekias Papaioannou and Hitron streets in Nicosia. The incident alarmed local residents and caused significant damage.
According to the police, a fire broke out in the establishment following the explosion. Preliminary reports suggest that the cause may have been a gas leak.
As reported by fire service spokesperson Andreas Kettis, the kitchen equipment and dining area of the restaurant were completely destroyed by fire. High temperatures and thick smoke also damaged the exterior walls of the building — affecting the finishing, paint, and cladding.
The residential building with apartments located above the restaurant was also damaged. Residents were evacuated urgently. There are no casualties.
Three fire crews worked at the scene. The fire was extinguished using hoses and breathing equipment. The area remains under security, and the investigation into the cause of the explosion continues.
