A PROJECT FOR THE DETOXIFICATION OF PHARMACEUTICAL WASTEWATER IS PRESENTED IN LIMASSOL
In Limassol, a project aimed at detoxifying pharmaceutical wastewater was presented. The project, titled "Life Pharma Detox," is being developed by scientists from across Europe and was introduced by the pharmaceutical company Medochemie.
The project focuses on purifying wastewater to make its re-entry into the ecosystem safe by transforming toxic chemical compounds into non-toxic ones.
It will be developed at the facilities of the pharmaceutical company in Limassol and will later be expanded to the company's plant in Duiven, the Netherlands, in two years.
The implementation of the project is expected to take about 5.5 years, with a total budget of 3.34 million euros.
According to the project director Maria Kyriazi, studies on soil, animals, fish, and water have shown the accumulation of various active pharmaceutical ingredients in water systems: a total of 559 different harmful substances have been detected worldwide, with 200 of these substances found in drinking water.
It is also noted that annually, 100,000 tons of pharmaceutical products are consumed worldwide, with almost a quarter of this consumption occurring in Europe.
