The development of a study for the preservation and restoration of the Church of Saint George of the Greeks is starting in Famagusta. This was announced on Facebook by the Greek Cypriot co-chair of the Bicommunal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, Sotos Ktoris.

According to him, the church dates back to the 14th century and is considered the largest Greek Orthodox church of the period of Frankish rule in Cyprus. The church is located within the fortified walls of Famagusta, near the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, now the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque.

According to Polignosi, the architecture of the church is unique and does not strictly belong to either the Gothic or Byzantine style. The building combines a Gothic basilica with a Byzantine dome. The walls of the church are built of carefully cut limestone blocks characteristic of Gothic monuments of that period.

The interior space is divided into three naves by two rows of four massive columns on each side, emphasizing the monumentality of the structure.

The start of the preparation of the study is regarded as an important step in preserving one of the key monuments of the Christian and cultural heritage of Famagusta.
