Tourism to Cyprus drops by 30% amid geopolitical tensions

In the first quarter of 2026, Cyprus faced a sharp decline in tourism flow—arrivals fell by approximately 30%, despite earlier expectations of growth.

According to industry representatives, the primary cause was the escalation of the situation in the Middle East, which influenced the choices of European tourists. Many travelers have begun to prefer more remote and stable destinations.

Tourism in Cyprus was further affected by security-related news, including reports of military activity in the region and a drone incident near the Akrotiri base.

The tourism industry notes that the beginning of April was relatively stable thanks to the Easter holidays; however, a further decline in demand is expected in the second half of the month and in the run-up to the summer season.

Experts believe the situation could change if geopolitical tensions subside. Otherwise, Cyprus will have to adapt its tourism strategy and compete more aggressively with other Mediterranean destinations.
