Nicosia District considers electricity generation from biogas at the Kotsiatis landfill

The Nicosia District administration is ready to take over the restored Kotsiatis landfill in order to use the biogas generated there for electricity production. This was announced by District President Konstantinos Yiorkadjis while summarizing the first 18 months of work of the new administrative structure.
According to him, the project will help partially compensate for the environmental burden that nearby communities have endured for decades due to the operation of the landfill. At the same time, the district will be able to reduce its dependence on the external electricity market and lower its own carbon footprint.
Biogas is formed inside closed landfills during the decomposition of organic waste without access to oxygen and consists mainly of methane. Currently, at such facilities the gas either escapes into the atmosphere or is burned in flare systems. In the case of Kotsiatis, the authorities plan to collect, purify, and use it for electricity generation, abandoning flaring.
As Yiorkadjis noted, this approach will significantly reduce the negative impact on the environment.
Although the potential of biogas as an energy source in Cyprus has been discussed since the mid-2010s, such projects have not yet received systematic implementation.
