Dangerous Air Pollution Levels Recorded in Cyprus
In Cyprus, permissible limits for air pollution by fine particulate matter (PM10) are regularly exceeded, the Minister of Labour reported to parliament.
The year 2023 was the most problematic: in Paralimni, the pollution level reached 350.6 µg/m³ against a permissible limit of 50 µg/m³. Furthermore, the frequency of these exceedances significantly surpassed acceptable thresholds.
The highest number of violations is recorded in Nicosia and Limassol. In 2025, Nicosia once again led in the number of exceedances.
Authorities periodically issue air pollution warnings, but these are only published when dangerous levels are reached.
Experts warn that long-term exposure to such particles can cause serious respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
