Cyprus Moves Closer to the EU Average in the Number of ICT Specialists
The share of information and communications technology (ICT) specialists in Cyprus reached 4.9% of total employment in 2025, almost matching the European Union average. This is according to Eurostat data published on Wednesday.
Over the past ten years, Cyprus’s ICT sector has shown significant growth. While specialists in the sector accounted for only 2.7% of the workforce in 2016, by 2025 the figure had almost doubled. In absolute terms, the number of ICT workers rose from 9,900 in 2016 to 24,700 in 2025. Compared with 2024, the increase was modest, with 24,200 specialists employed in the sector at the time.
Across the EU as a whole, there were 10.45 million ICT specialists in 2025, representing 5% of total employment. The highest level of employment in this sector was recorded in Sweden at 8.9%, followed by Luxembourg at 8.7% and Finland at 7.8%.
The lowest figures were recorded in Greece (2.5%), Romania (2.7%) and Italy (3.8%).
Eurostat also points to the persistent gender imbalance in the sector. In 2025, men accounted for 80.5% of all ICT specialists in the EU, while women made up 19.5%. At the same time, the share of women in the sector has been gradually rising, increasing by three percentage points over the past ten years.
The highest share of women among ICT specialists was recorded in Romania, Latvia and Bulgaria.
