Cyprus offers free Meningitis B vaccination for students following UK outbreak
The Ministry of Health of Cyprus has announced free vaccination against meningococcal group B (MenB) for students associated with the University of Kent, following an outbreak in Canterbury, UK.
According to the UK Health Security Agency, the outbreak was recorded on March 13, 2026, and linked to visits to the Club Chemistry nightclub. Those infected visited the venue on March 5, 6, and 7. In total, about 4,800 people, mostly students, visited the club during these days.
As of April 1, 21 cases of MenB infection have been confirmed, and two people have died.
UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting called the situation "unprecedented." A vaccination program has already been launched in the country, with more than 11,400 vaccinations administered.
Given the active movement of students between Cyprus and the UK, the Cyprus authorities have decided to introduce similar measures.
Free vaccination is available to:
- Students associated with the University of Kent
- Those preparing to go for studies
- Those who have recently returned to Cyprus
A student ID or proof of enrollment will be required for an appointment.
The vaccine is available by appointment at state health centers:
- Nicosia: Archbishop Makarios III Hospital; Latsia vaccination center
- Larnaca: Larnaca General Hospital
- Limassol: Old Limassol Hospital
- Paphos: Paphos General Hospital; Polis Chrysochous Health Centre (on Tuesdays)
- Famagusta: Famagusta Health Centre
MenB transmission occurs through close and prolonged contact, including shared living, kissing, or sharing utensils.
