Farmers sound alarm over Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak: accuse authorities of inaction
Owners of livestock farms where Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) was detected are declaring an emergency and a complete lack of coordination from government services.
According to them, despite official statements about protocols being followed, chaos reigns on the ground. Farmers claim that positive test results were known as early as 11:00 PM on Friday, yet veterinary service representatives had still not arrived by noon on Saturday.
"We have been left alone," say the farm owners. They also state that the area has not been isolated as required by biosafety measures. They claim that trucks continue to enter and exit freely, transporting carcasses without proper disinfection, which they believe increases the risk of the virus spreading across the island.
