Cyprus energy market: business demands faster launch of energy storage systems

The Electricity Market Association has sharply criticized the prolonged implementation of energy storage projects in Cyprus. Industry representatives state that the delay is already negatively affecting consumers, investment attractiveness, and the stability of the country's energy system.

According to the Association, energy storage systems are a key element for expanding the use of renewable energy sources and ensuring reliable grid operation. The organization emphasizes that these specific technologies are capable of reducing electricity costs for households and businesses, and further delays jeopardize the country's energy transition.

Of particular concern is that the lack of modern storage systems limits the use of cheaper 'green' energy. This, as market representatives note, hinders the formation of a full competitive environment and maintains high tariffs for end consumers.

The Association believes that the main reason for the current situation is the lengthy processing of connection terms by the Distribution System Operator, which is part of the Electricity Authority. In some cases, the wait exceeds 12 months, which, according to market participants, raises serious questions regarding the transparency of procedures and equal treatment of investors.

Furthermore, the delays are already impacting owners of photovoltaic systems. Due to the lack of storage infrastructure, part of the generated solar energy is lost, although it could be used to reduce the grid load and decrease electricity bills.

The Association warns that further delay will lead to increased pressure on the energy system and slow down the implementation of environmentally friendly technologies in Cyprus.
