The Only Geriatric Clinic in Cyprus Faces Closure
The only geriatric clinic in Cyprus is closing down. The medical facility opened in July of last year.
According to Philenews, the compensations offered by the Health Insurance Organization under the General Healthcare System were insufficient to cover the operational expenses of the clinic. As a result, the hospital's management had to turn to the country's parliament, requesting the intervention of parliamentary parties.
According to the director of the "Athena" polyclinic, where the geriatric clinic is located, Yannis Tafunas, despite all the letters and efforts of the medical institution's leadership, continuing the clinic's operation is not possible.
"At a time when the needs for elderly care increase due to seasonal infections, we cannot offer our services," stated the doctor.
In the letter addressed to the parliament, the authorities' behavior is described as "unacceptable" and "irresponsible," informing the parties that the suspension of the clinic's operation will leave about 20 specialists unemployed.
