Limassol rape case referred to Criminal Court — accused taken into custody

The criminal case concerning violence against a woman, initially registered with the District Court, has been referred for direct consideration by the Criminal Court following new instructions from the Attorney General.
According to the case materials, the victim asked her partner to delete photographs with his former girlfriend. In response, the man allegedly behaved aggressively: he threatened her, insulted her, and used physical violence. When the woman attempted to leave the house, he allegedly grabbed her by the hair and, as she claims, raped her.
The incident was reported the following day to the Limassol police domestic violence unit, as the accused had already left for work by that time.
Initially, the case was sent to the District Court; however, it was later transferred to the Criminal Court on the instructions of the Attorney General. At the hearing held on February 4, both the accused and the complainant were present in court. Under oath, the woman stated that she wished to withdraw the complaint and no longer had any claims.
Despite this, the judicial process continued. Prosecutor Panikos Avraamidis requested that the accused be held in custody until the start of the trial, citing the evidence collected and the provisions of the Istanbul Convention.
The court rejected the defense’s objections, granted the prosecution’s request, and ordered that the accused be remanded in custody at the Central Prison until the start of the trial, which is scheduled for mid-March.
