British Bases announce controlled explosions in Akrotiri area

The British Sovereign Base Areas authorities in Cyprus have warned of planned controlled explosions in the Akrotiri base area between May 18 and May 20.

According to an official statement, the blasting operations will be conducted as part of "routine activities" and are classified as low-power operations. They are scheduled for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 9:00 to 17:00.

The SBA Administration emphasized that there is no cause for public concern. Authorities are notifying residents in advance about possible explosion sounds that may be heard during the specified hours.

The statement also noted that such activities are carried out regularly and are part of standard engineering and operational works on the base territory.

Residents of the surrounding areas were thanked for their understanding and cooperation and urged to remain calm during the operations.

Controlled explosions are standard practice at military facilities and are used for technical needs, including infrastructure preparation and facility security.
