On March 12, 2026, in Girne, Northern Cyprus, representatives of the High Council of Broadcasting (YYK) held a meeting with students of the Faculty of Communication at Girne American University (GAÜ). The visit was led by the Chairman of the Council, Feyzi Hansel, and the delegation also included coordinator Yasemin Saban and member Hüseyin Gürlek. The invitation came from the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Neriman Saygılı, who is also a member of the YYK.

During the seminar, the council representatives spoke about the organization's goals and mission, as well as its activities: issuing broadcasting licenses and permits, monitoring programs, conducting public research, organizing educational seminars, and providing internships for students and media professionals. Hansel reminded that the council was established in 1997 as a state structure and is managed by a nine-member governing body, including representatives appointed by the President and nominated by parliamentary groups.

Hansel also explained the procedure for responding to violations: first, a warning is issued; for repeated violations, fines are applied; and if violations continue, the matter is referred to court. In 2022, the right to shut down broadcasting was transferred to the TRNC courts; preliminary censorship is not applied. Saban noted the insufficient attention of students to local media and the impossibility of implementing an ideal "media literacy" course program through the Ministry of National Education, which limits the introduction of desired educational practices.

For residents in Northern Cyprus, these explanations signify the preservation of mechanisms for protecting rights and broadcasting standards, as well as the availability of opportunities for training and internships in the media industry.
