Banknotes Featuring King Charles III Released into Circulation in the United Kingdom
Starting from June 5th, banknotes featuring the portrait of King Charles III have been released into circulation in the United Kingdom for the first time. Banknotes with the image of Queen Elizabeth II will remain legal tender.
According to information published on the Bank of England's website, the front side of the new banknotes with denominations of £5, £10, £20, and £50 sterling pounds depicts the profile of the monarch. This is duplicated on the left side of the note in a transparent protective window next to the image of Big Ben.
On the reverse side of the banknotes, former Prime Minister Winston Churchill, writer Jane Austen, artist J.M.W. Turner, and mathematician Alan Turing continue to be depicted.
In a statement from the regulator, it is noted that the new money is printed only to replace worn-out notes and meet the overall increased demand. Banknotes with the old design, featuring Queen Elizabeth II, will continue to circulate alongside the banknotes of King Charles III.
"Our approach aligns with recommendations from the royal family aimed at minimizing the environmental and financial consequences of this change," the bank's statement reads.
Those interested can exchange old banknotes for new ones until June 30th. However, each individual can exchange no more than £300 sterling pounds.
