Ancient tomb discovered during excavations in Famagusta port

Representatives of the Department of Antiquities and Museums of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment stated that an ancient tomb was discovered in the port of Famagusta.
The tomb was found at the site of a collapsed section in the port area. It was revealed that the collapse was caused by an ancient rock-cut tomb.
Due to the seriousness of the situation, safety measures were taken in the area through coordination with the Famagusta Police Department and the port security service. The area was guarded 24/7 prior to the start of excavations.
During the excavations that began on the morning of Monday, June 23, 2025, it was determined that the entrance to the chamber-shaped stone tomb with three loculi was sealed with stone blocks. According to initial assessments, the tomb dates back to the Hellenistic period, which spans from the death of Alexander the Great to the full establishment of Roman rule.
The excavations uncovered terracotta bowls, oil lamps, lagynoi, unguentaria, various ceramic artifacts, glass unguentaria, bronze coins and pins, as well as gold leaves. Human bone remains were also found inside the tomb.
