In Northern Cyprus, the driver of a car that struck three pedestrians on a sidewalk in Kyrenia last weekend appeared before the court. As a result of the fatal accident, one person died on the spot, and three others suffered serious injuries, one of whom is in intensive care; doctors are currently fighting for his life.

During the court hearing, a police representative reminded that the traffic accident occurred on March 23rd around 17:00 on Bedrettin Demirel Street in Kyrenia. The defendant, Hekmen Güniken, was speeding and lost control, causing the car to veer off the road onto the sidewalk, hitting three pedestrians - Cihan Yüksel, Büşra Yavuz, and Begüm Döşkaya.

One of the victims, Cihan Yüksel, died at the scene of the incident. Two more young people were initially taken to Akçiçek Hospital in Kyrenia and then transferred to the State Hospital in Nicosia. One of the victims is in the intensive care unit, and the other is in the surgical department.

The third victim - a passenger of the car - was being treated for a broken ankle and has already been discharged from the hospital.

In a statement, the police noted that the driver was sober at the time of the pedestrian collision, and no alcohol was found in his blood. However, drug tests are still being conducted.

The police also added that, judging by the surveillance camera footage capturing the moment of the accident, the driver was significantly speeding and "cut off" the cars ahead of him.

Based on the police statements, the court decided to detain the suspect for three days for further investigation.
