TRNC restaurateurs warn of potential protests over rising gas prices

The TRNC Restaurant Owners Association (RES-BİR) has issued a harsh statement following the increase in liquefied gas prices, calling on the authorities to urgently take measures to support businesses and the public. The organization emphasized that otherwise, the sector is ready to resort to “all necessary democratic measures.”

The reason for the appeal was the recent increase in the cost of domestic gas, which, according to industry representatives, has intensified pressure on restaurants, cafes, and small businesses that are already experiencing serious financial difficulties.

RES-BİR noted that entrepreneurs are facing a constant rise in expenses, while the purchasing power of the population continues to decline. According to the association's representatives, it is becoming increasingly difficult for citizens to cover even basic food expenses.

Businesses are particularly concerned about the expected increase in the minimum wage next month. The association believes that the new costs could be critical for many public catering establishments and small businesses.

“Restaurants, cafes, producers, and small businesses are already operating at their limits. Another increase in expenses could lead to business closures and new economic difficulties,” the statement said.

RES-BİR also emphasized that simply raising prices on goods and services does not solve the problem and only increases inflationary pressure. The association called on the government to develop real mechanisms to support businesses and take steps to reduce the economic burden.

The organization stated that the sector expects concrete steps from the authorities to stabilize the situation and protect both entrepreneurs and consumers.
