Meritta Rehabilitation Center Visited Fishermen in Six Regions of Northern Cyprus
On March 18, 2026, representatives of the Meritta Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center visited fishermen in the regions of Yedidalga, Famagusta, Erenköy, Esentepe, Kaplıca, and Lapta in Northern Cyprus. The visits were timed to the Ramadan Bayram holiday and reported on the Kıbrıs Gazetesi website.
During the meetings, current fishing issues, difficulties faced by fishermen at sea, and questions regarding the future of the profession were discussed. The center noted its cooperation with fishermen to preserve sea turtle populations and regularly exchanges information with them about situations threatening the animals.
Biologist and Director of the Meritta Rehabilitation Center, Silem Sargın Kara, congratulated all fishermen on the holiday and emphasized the importance of the center's relationship with coastal communities. She stated that it is vital for the center to listen to the experiences of fishermen, understand their problems, and jointly seek solutions, while also thanking them for their contribution to sea turtle conservation.
For the residents of Northern Cyprus, these visits signify a continued dialogue between conservation organizations and the fishing community, which may help improve coordination when injured animals are found and reduce risks to marine fauna.
