Dangerous excess: violations in vegetables and berries identified in TRNC

The TRNC Ministry of Agriculture reported the identification of exceedances in the permissible levels of plant protection products in a number of products following inspections conducted from April 24 to 30. Both imported and local agricultural goods came under intensified control.
A total of 52 samples were analyzed in the state laboratory: 21 imported and 31 domestic. Most of the products complied with European safety standards — 20 imported and 28 local samples were found to be clean.
However, violations were still identified. In imported strawberries, an excess of permissible pesticide concentrations was found — the batch was seized and destroyed. Among local products, issues were recorded in beans, green peppers, and tomatoes. In one case, the use of an unauthorized substance was identified, and in others, the exceedance of permissible limits.
Specifically, the beans were destroyed, and the harvesting of peppers and tomatoes has been temporarily suspended pending completion of additional laboratory analyses.
The ministry emphasized that inspections are conducted in accordance with EU standards and are aimed at protecting consumer health. If violations are identified, immediate measures are taken, including the withdrawal of products from the market.
Experts note that such cases highlight the need for strict control over the use of agrochemicals and compliance with instructions by producers. Authorities urge farmers to observe the established norms and consumers not to neglect washing and processing vegetables and fruits before consumption.
